ABSTRACT:
Introduction: “Emotional intelligence as a cluster of skills is viewed today as an essential and influential variable that determines life's success. Emotional intelligence broadly referred to the abilities and capabilities, which acknowledge, recognize, understand and channelize as well as regulate emotions in one self and others in our environment” Goleman (2005). The objectives of the study were 1) To assess the level of emotional intelligence among adolescent students in a selected school, Nagpur.2) To determine the association between selected demographic variables and level of emotional intelligence. Method: non experimental descriptive research design was used to assess the level of emotional intelligence and to find the association between emotional intelligence and selected demographic variables. This study was conducted on 100 adolescent students. Result: the study shows that 80 (80%) students having high emotional intelligence, 20 (20%) students having moderate emotional intelligence and none of the adolescent students having low emotional intelligence. Conclusion: the major findings of the study revealed that there was significant association between level of emotional intelligence and selected demographic variables i.e. age and gender at 0.05 level of significance by using chi square test. And the mean score of high emotional intelligence is 134.43 and moderate emotional intelligence is 114.1 and study found that there is high emotional intelligence in female adolescent students as compared to male adolescent students.

INTRODUCTION:
“Emotional intelligence as a cluster of skills is viewed today as an essential and influential variable that determines life's success. Today, emotional intelligence as skill has evolved with rapid speed. There are varieties of definitions flooded through media all over the world. Emotional intelligence skill as we understand is an intelligent “common sense” that blends very well with other human skills and values which are used for the well-being of an individual on daily basis.
Emotional intelligence skills work as a stepping-stone to success in every field that creates feelings to comprehend emotions, emotional knowledge and intellectual growth.3 recently, there has been some evidence that aspects of EI can be reliably measured in adults and can predict important outcomes (e.g. depression) even after controlling for other relevant variables such as IQ and neuroticism. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in how EI (or Emotional Competence) develops. Most of this research has measured EI in young people using performance measures (eg. Facial recognitions) surprisingly, little research has examined the usefulness of EI self reported measures in adolescents (cf. Spirito et al.).Research study revealed that EI was reliably measured in adolescents, was higher for females than males, and was positively associated with skill that identifying emotional expressions, amount of social support, extent of satisfaction with social support and mood management behavior. Emotional skills among adolescents are like a phrase that includes their character, emotions and motivation.2 Researchers have found that adolescents those who manage their emotions are found to have good social interactions and exhibit high academic performance.4
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
A non experimental descriptive research design was used to assess the level of emotional intelligence among adolescent students. 100 samples were selected by non probability convenience sampling technique. Schutte self report emotional intelligence test was administered to 100 adolescent students. Data gathered was analyzed using descriptive inferential statistics in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and chi square test.1
RESULTS:
The result of the study done among adolescent boys and girls (N=100) on their levels of emotional intelligence was depicted under the following content.
In this study total 11 demographic variables was selected (age, gender, religion, type of family, socioeconomic background, occupation of father, occupation of mother, to whom you share your personal problem more, extracurricular activity, hobbies)
Among that 28% of the students were in the age group of 13 yr., 34% of the students were in the age group of 14yr., 30% of the students were in the age group of 15yr. and only 8% of students of age group of 16 year. In which 66% of the students were male while 34% of the students were female.

The above table no. 1 explained percentage level of emotional intelligence, in which 80% students having high emotional intelligence, 20% students having moderate emotional intelligence and none of students having low emotional intelligence.
The present revealed that there is significant association between demographic variables i.e. age and gender at 0.05 level of significance.

The table no. 2 revels that 80(80%) of students having high emotional intelligence and the mean score for this is 134.43, 20(20%) of students having moderate emotional intelligence and mean score for this is 114.1 and none of students having low emotional intelligence. The mean percentage of emotional intelligence is 79.368%. Standard deviation2 of emotional intelligence is 10.904.
The study was done by using modified schutte self reported emotional intelligence test to asses level of emotional intelligence among the adolescent students. Chi- square test1 was used to find out the association between demographic variable and level of emotional intelligence.
In most of the studies it is found that there is a great association of emotional intelligence with the demographic variables such as gender, academic achievement, socioeconomic background etc. In our study the data reveals that there is association of emotional intelligence with gender.
